RAILWAY MOTOR CARS, MAINTENANCE
8-MAN, 3000 LB LOAD CAPACITY, 56-1/2 INCH GAUGE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-R-10651.
This commercial item description covers the requirements for an 8-man railway maintenance motor car of 2000 pound load capacity meeting all applicable American Railway Engineering Association (AREA) requirements.
Salient Characteristics.
Standard commercial engine (gas or diesel) sized to meet performance requirements set forth under “intended use”. Engine shall be enclosed with movable panels for ease of maintenance.
Transmission capable of transmitting the full power of the engine with equal speed in either direction of travel and with all gear lever positions clearly and durably labeled.
Electric starting.
Industrial strength energy battery.
Heavy-duty alternator.
Brakes applied at all four wheels.
Auxiliary parking brake inside cab.
Elastomer or spring-type suspension.
Heavy duty tapered roller bearings.
Flanged steel wheels meeting AREA or AAR requirements.
Cab enclosed by metal canopy top and flexible side curtains that can be secured either open or closed from both inside and out with quick-release fasteners.
Safety glass windshields front and rear.
Dual electric windshield wipers front and rear.
Upholstered seating for eight persons.
Interior cab light.
Sealed beam headlights and taillights front and rear.
Illuminated instrument panel equipped with standard operating controls, gages, and switches and with all position and functions clearly labeled. Electric horn.
One 5 pound dry chemical fire extinguisher with location clearly stenciled. Tool storage area.
Rail sweeps at all wheels.
Derail guards.
Turntable with pivot and set-off rails.
Drawheads at each end.
Self-closing hooks with safety catch at each end.
Four lifting lugs of sufficient capacity to lift motor car with location clearly indicated by stenciling “SLING HERE”.
