Intended use. The motor car is intended to transport men and materials to work sites under its own power. It shall be capable of operating at a minimum of 10 mph when transporting a load of 2,000 pounds and towing five loaded 3-ton trailer cars simultaneously on straight and level track. The motor car shall be capable of negotiating a 100 foot radius curve.
Materials and workmanship: Materials shall meet ASTM and AREA specifications where applicable for the purpose intended. The 8-man railway maintenance motor car shall be fabricated from compatible materials, inherently corrosion resistant or treated to provide protection against the various forms of corrosion and deterioration that may be encountered in any of the applicable storage and operating environment to which the item may be exposed. Dissimilar metals, as defined in MIL-STD-889 shall be electrically insulated from one another to minimize or prevent galvanic corrosion. Workmanship in construction and finish shall be of high quality and consistent with industry standards.
Environmental condition. The motor car shall be capable of operation without malfunction or damage at ambient temperatures from -25°F to +125°F.
Essential safety features. All parts that rotate, reciprocate, or are subject to high operational temperatures and that are so located as to a hazard to operating personnel, shall be guarded or insulated. All floors and steps shall have anti-skid surfaces. Fluid level indicators for engine, transmission, and other components shall be within easy and safe access of the operator or maintenance personnel. All controls shall be within convenient reach and vision of operator in his normal operating position and in accordance with SAE Human Factors Engineering Recommendations. Noise levels shall meet OSHA/FRA standards.
Standard commercial product. The above salient characteristics are set forth as minimum requirements. The ballast regulator shall be in accordance with these minimum requirements and shall be the manufacturer’s standard commercial product. Additional or better features which are not specifically prohibited by this specification but which are a part of the manufacturer’s standard commercial product shall be included in the model being furnished. A standard commercial product is a product which has been sold or is being currently offered for sale on the commercial market through advertisements, manufacturer’s catalogs, or brochures, and represents the latest production model. It shall have been in production, marketed, and in use for a minimum of one year. The introduction of normal product improvements is acceptable. The car shall differ from the standard commercial product if serious differences exist between the standard commercial product and MIL-STD-1472.
Acceptance. Acceptance of these motor cars shall be based on visual inspection and demonstration of its performance capabilities. The first produced motor car shall be completely inspected to insure that all components have been provided.
